Book Review: 10 Signatures to Bargain with God
I love plot twists. I've seen this twists through animes like Madoka, Code Geass, Log Horizon and Fate Zero.
Why do I mentioned this? Probably this has something to do with my review about a book called 10 Signatures to Bargain with God written by a popular author under the name of HaveYouSeenThisGirl, the author who wrote the popular Diary ng Panget that was adapted into a movie.
The book tells about the story of a girl whose life is about to end because of an incurable disease. To resolve her sadness, she decided to create a list of signatures signed by her loved ones that she can bargain with God.The further scenes will tell more about her life while requesting for signatures and struggling to live. It was an interesting premise.
Ah~ I can still remember that time when I went to National Bookstore and encountered this book. I've read it's introduction (in the back) and honestly, the intro got me hooked. Unfortunately, I didn't bought it immediately until I attended an event. It was fun and amazing.
Now, I went home and started reading this book. Hey, the first chapters were good and it gave a glimpse of the girl's challenge in life. This premise was further strengthened as I read the next chapters.
Honestly, the book was good and it made me cry so much because it was written in the girl's POV. This was a good technique for making the reader feel emotional as if she/he was that girl.
Then the moment has arrived. This part definitely added fuel to the fire because the fire I'm talking about in this book was the idea of the girl requesting for a signature from her loved ones-- which I thought was laughable and pathetic because the idea doesn't make sense at all. However, I commend the emotional scenes that drove me to tears.
Okay so what was a the fuel here? It is the ending part.Seriously, the ending part was the biggest DOWNFALL in this book. That was the worst plot twist that I've ever encountered! Why?
Because I felt cheated and a good plot twist don't make it's reader felt cheated. This author has attempted to shock her reader by making the ending a quick solution. It can be a Deus Ex Machina but I can't say that it was really.
I'm totally ranting over the ending part of this book. An attempted tragedy. An attempted plan to make readers cry a lot but in the end it made a reader go "WTF."
If you're planning to write a twist then at least make it applicable to the theme your story has. The ending part was bad I tell you (at least for me) that I literally slammed that book on the wall.
A good beginning but a worst ending. The efforts of making me feel emotionally was ruined by a plot twist. Overall, this book for me is MEH.
I would like to clarify that this review was based from my point of view and has no intention of offending the author. Thank you.
