Review: Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (series)

The scenes in the visual novel game Fate StayNight Unlimited Blade Works Realta Nua.

If you've been whining about the previous versions and drools over Fate Zero then definitely you'll like this one. You have to give this series a try!

We all know about the Fate route that was adapted by Deen. While it's being good and simple, this now is being better. But I'm not going to compare anything here since both versions are good on their own. The movie gave justice to the important points of the 2nd route of this visual novel titled "Unlimited Blade Works." Really.

And so, here's Proto bringing you all her thoughts about the new series of the same UBW route. This time it's even amazing. Starting from its visuals up to its plot arrangments. Definitely this is something that ufotable fans would always expect from such type of animation.

The story is just what visual novel players and readers would expect. Ufotable definitely gave justice  to the route's most important plot points. In addition to that, there were also some plot changes but those changes blended well with the original plot. I'm sure visual novel players noticed this. Even I myself who read the visual novel itself. They removed the unnecessary parts in the story while giving justice to important elements such as character backgrounds and many more.

If the previous movie version's Illya scene was more brutal then this series' Illya scene was more emotional and melancholic. The series itself was connected with Fate Zero's events so definitely those who watched that show know what I'm talking about here. There are also hints about the previous Zero events that were well connected with this series.

This route talks more about ideologies and other philosophical terms but probably this route focuses more on the "self" of the protagonist. The atmosphere, the visuals, the music blended well with this theme and these elements reinforced the emotional impact of the show.  Another thing to expect from the amazing Yuki Kajiura and her OST compositions. We all know how Kajiura's music reinforced the impact of anime shows-- even Kara no Kyoukai. The music, the tempo of each OSTs matched well with each scenes of the series. It is something nostalgic for those who've watched KnK and Fate Zero.

While I'm telling how amazing our great Kajiura is, I would also like to mention Kalafina, Ayano Mashiro and Aimer for totally nailing this series' theme songs. All songs matched well with each season's themes and even those who liked J-pop without watching the show might get hook with this (I bet).

Ayano Mashiro's "ideal white" gave the more hyped feeling for the show which is just perfect for those who are first timers in watching the series. The song was used as an opening of the first season. It was perfectly blended with the opening sequence's action scenes. Fast tempo that expresses the protagonist's bravery in this season.

Now let's move to Kalafina. Oh, I just love this group. They sang the first season's ending song titled "believe". This was something giving an emotional impact to its listeners. The song's music and lyrics blended together and the girl's voices is just a s perfect. The song clearly expresses about someone believing his/her own ideal and searching for his/her purpose in life or in many aspects while having a little piece of support for the other persons.

Let's move to the second season's songs. If the previous season of this series focuses on the characters' challenge in ideology then this season's theme mainly focuses on the characters' answers in their questions. This is part where the characters' finally chose their ideological paths.

Aimer's Brave Shine is just beautiful and totally nailed this season's opening theme. The song was not very fast and upbeat compared to other opening songs. This song expressed clearly about the character's strength; about the character's courage in choosing his/her path while giving importance to the support of the people around him/her. The lyrics clearly expressed how the character feels in this season.

Next is the song ring your bell by Kalafina. This song is very encouraging giving the listeners some raise in their esteem. The music is very emotionally light while the bridge part showed the amazing blend of the voices of Wakana, Hikaru and Keiko. The lyrics expresses clearly about a person who shines despite of challenges in his/her life. The lyrics tells that person that he/she deserves more and that he/she finally can see the light of his/her path. In this series' season, this song expresses the other character's feelings towards that character. The other version of this song which was played after Illya's episode was more melancholic and more prayer like. The beauty of Kajiurago was shown in this versions although I also heard that it was supposed to be darker. But, it's tone, tempo and dynamics gave emotional impact to me. It was sad, so sad after that episode which gave emotional and dramatic atmosphere to Proto.

I'm sure everyone who watched this season's UBW would definitely agree with me in this term: Action. The action scenes were the best! I can still remember how beautiful Kara no Kyoukai's action choreography back then. It was worth mentioning. For the general info of those who  still haven't nor know this series, this UBW route have more action scenes. So definitely those who've been searching for good actions would definitely love this series starting from Archer vs. Lancer's fight or even as simple as Rin's escape. All were done beautifully.

The characters were awesome and mostly gave justice to the plot. Each characters' past, background stories gave important message to its viewers who don't have any idea about the route itself. Even I myself didn't expect Caster's back story that explicit because the visual novel's version didn't really told anything more about Caster's past. However, the show didn't really gave that much hint about Archer's back story. The visual novel's the same too but it didn't left me disappointed because even I the viewer learned something new about Archer's character and background. The voice actors were just as good and amazing. The visuals matched well with the voice actors' dialogues. You can even notice this especially if you observe Rin in the scenes. It's just.. amazing.

Overall, this series is just amazing although I can't say that it's very perfect that it got no flaws. Every anime has flaws even if it was well made. I want you people to know it for yourselves.

I have lots of things to say about this series but I don't want to spoil for those who haven't watched this series. I want you people who haven't watched it to interpret the scenes by yourselves because I believe that each of us views anime shows in different angles. But, if this series will be nominated as Best Anime series then definitely I'll vote for this one!

That's all for this series' review but I may update this if have other things to discuss. Watch out for more of this!
